Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need installed on my home computer in order to take online or blended classes?

For most courses, all you need is a word processing program that can save in MSWord, RTF or PDF format.  Online and blended courses use Canvas to host the online classrooms.  Canvas is user-friendly and does not require any special skills or equipment.

Are online courses "easier" than courses taken in a regular classroom (seated classes)?

Online classes cover the same material taught in traditional classroom settings. People have different learning styles, and the desired method by which classes are delivered may vary from person to person. Online learning requires a bit more self-discipline than taking a seated course.  Instructors provide a weekly lesson plan with written lectures.  Courses are delivered in a flexible, asynchronous format, whereby you attend class weekly when it is convenient to your personal schedule.  Classes do have minimum participation requirements.  Deadlines and due dates are outlined in the course syllabus by the instructor.

How many online or blended courses can I register for per semester?

Registration restrictions are the same for online, blended, and seated courses.  Five courses (up to 17 credit hours) is the limit without gaining special permission from the Registrar’s Office. You can take five courses in a standard 16-week semester or you can take advantage of our 8-week compressed courses. The limit for 8-week courses is seven credit hours at a time (you can take two courses in each 8-week block per semester).

How are tests administered for online courses?

Online tests are conducted within your online classroom in Canvas.  Your instructor will provide a link to the exam, along with instructions.  You may complete the tests from your home computer.

How does dropping a class affect my student status?

Before classes begin, you can drop your class(es) by contacting your advisor. Please check the academic calendar each semester for specific deadlines.  After the drop period you are financially responsible for your classes, online or otherwise.

What do I do if I have technical difficulties?

If you experience issues with accessing your course in Canvas, or if you have difficulty accessing your Drury email or MyDrury, please contact the Help Desk at (417) 873-7300 or helpdeskticket@drury.edu.

Are there scholarships and financial aid available for online students?

Visit the Financial Aid web page for information on how to submit a Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA) and how to apply for Drury scholarships.

How do I contact my online instructor? The primary means of contact with your in

The primary means of contact with your instructor is within Canvas. Your instructor’s email address and telephone number are included on your course syllabus. It is recommended that you print your syllabus in case you are unable to access Canvas for any reason throughout the semester.

How will I be asked to verify my identity in an online class?

For purposes of verifying the identity of the students while participating in this course, students may be asked to attach a real-time picture of themselves, enter their student ID number, attach a picture of the student’s Drury ID Card, or do a video presentation.  Any action would be given a short time period to act upon; therefore, students need to be prepared to verify their identity throughout the course.
