SPRINGFIELD, Mo., January 22, 2025 — Drury University proudly celebrates Lori Hutton ’88 MA ’93, Director of Jazz Studies, as the recipient of the 2025 Outstanding Jazz Educator Award presented by the Missouri Association for Jazz Education (MOAJE). This prestigious honor recognizes exceptional contributions to jazz education in the state of Missouri.
“I am truly honored to receive this prestigious award,” Hutton shared. “I’ve had such an incredibly fulfilling career sharing my passion for music with so many amazing students. I feel blessed and deeply grateful.”
Hutton’s distinguished career spans more than 25 years, including her time as a public school music educator and the Interim Director of Instrumental Studies at Southwest Baptist University. A proud Drury alumna, Hutton earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and Arts Management in 1988 and a Master’s in Secondary Education in 1993. She has also served as MOAJE’s secretary for a decade, demonstrating her commitment to advancing jazz education statewide.
Dr. Jay Dougherty, Performing Arts Department Chair and Director of Choral Activities at Drury University, praised Hutton’s lasting impact: “Lori Hutton’s impact on jazz education extends far beyond the classroom. Through her leadership, passion, and years of service, she has shaped not only her students but also the broader jazz community. This award is a testament to her lasting influence, and we’re honored to have her as part of the Drury faculty.”
The award will be formally presented during the Missouri Music Educators Association (MMEA) conference on Saturday, February 1, 2025, just before the Missouri All-State Jazz Ensemble performance at Margaritaville Lake Resort in Osage Beach, Missouri.
