SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Jan. 12, 2022 – James and Patricia Spangler graduated from Drury University in 1961, and they’ve always remembered the values and teachings imparted on them by the institution. Over the years they found their passion within the arts: Mrs. Spangler serving as a director of the Flint Institute of the Arts and Mr. Spangler as a trustee with the Flint Institute of Music. And so, when they had the opportunity to share their passion and invest in the success of Drury students, they seized the chance, pledging $1 million to the university.

“We are very grateful to the Spanglers for their generosity and commitment to Drury,” said Drury President Dr. Tim Cloyd. “Their gift will be used to ensure Drury’s continued promise of prioritizing the needs of our students and providing excellence in education.”

The substantial gift will support renovations to Clara Thompson Hall, including the foyer, auditorium, stage, lighting, technology, sound system and dressing room. Clara Thompson was built in 1926 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The space houses Drury’s Music Department and is used as a classroom and performance space for concerts, recitals and guest speakers.

“This transformational gift will have a significant impact on recruitment, retention and our connection to the greater Springfield community.  We are humbled by the Spangler’s passion and commitment to music and to Drury,” said Dr. Allin Sorenson, associate provost and dean of the school of communication, fine and preforming arts.

In recognition, the auditorium in Clara Thompson Hall will be renamed the James and Patricia Spangler Auditorium in honor of the couple; a plaque will be placed near each of the two main entrances.

The Spanglers hope their gift will make a difference for Drury and serve as a catalyst to create a space enjoyed by the community at large.

“We look forward to the result of our gift and watching it impact Drury students, faculty, and the Springfield community,” said Mr. Spangler.

Renovations will begin as soon as plans are finalized.
