SPRINGFIELD, Mo., June 13, 2023 — This Fall, Drury University will welcome its first Drury Distinguished Scholars recipients to campus as incoming freshmen. These exceptional students earned full tuition scholarships after achieving top scores during the inaugural five-hour competition held on December 3, 2022.

“We are thrilled to recognize the outstanding achievements of these scholars and provide them with this prestigious opportunity,” said Kevin Kropf, Executive Vice President for Enrollment Management, Marketing, and Communication. “The Drury Distinguished Scholars program is a testament to our commitment to academic excellence and nurturing exceptional talent.”

The highly competitive program saw participation from 45 high school students. To qualify for the competition, students had to be ranked in the top five percent of their class and the top eight percent of standardized test takers. After rigorous evaluation, the following four students were selected as scholarship recipients:

  • Alea Burks from Springfield, who is currently undecided on her major.
  • Preston Dotson from Marshfield, who will major in Chemistry.
  • Gabrielle (Gabi) Huntoon from Lenexa, KS, who will pursue a major in Computer Science-Software Engineering while also representing Drury on the women’s lacrosse team.
  • Gracie Waterman from Lebanon, MO, who will major in Criminology.

Expressing her enthusiasm about coming to Drury, Burks said, “I am most excited to meet people from all across the world, as well as be a part of the amazing community that Drury has to offer!”

The Drury Distinguished Scholars Program competition encompassed three key components, which were evaluated by a panel of esteemed faculty members. The components included writing an essay, the choice between a discussion of a written text or presentation and an interview with two faculty members.

Registration for the next Drury Distinguished Scholars program will open in November.
