Drury GO and Mercy Partnership offer new Surgical Technologist training program

Springfield, Mo., March 15, 2024 – Drury GO, Drury University’s evening and online program, is thrilled to announce its partnership with Mercy Hospital to provide a Surgical Technologist with Medical Terminology Pre-Certification Training Program. This comprehensive program aims to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in surgical technology while providing essential medical terminology training. 

Regarding the importance of this new partnership, James Ackerman, Senior Associate Vice President of Drury GO, said “Mercy is an important healthcare provider in the communities we serve. Through this partnership, we help facilitate workforce training and job opportunities for individuals to pursue a rewarding profession that could change their lives.”

Mercy will also be sponsoring students in the program, covering the cost. The curriculum covers multiple topics, including the basics of word structure, human anatomy, major drug classifications, surgical procedures and medical abbreviations. Students will gain hands-on experience in various aspects of surgical technology from pre-op preparations to post-operative care, which will prepare them for a successful career.

Jessica Atchison, Executive Director of Professional Practice at Mercy Springfield Communities, underlined the need for surgical technicians to ensure the best patient care. She stated, “We need more surgical technicians, and this program provides financial support to ease the burden of educational expenses so that students can focus on their studies.”

The Surgical Technologist program also meets the requirements for students to take the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) – Tech in Surgery (TS-C) exam. Additionally, this program will include supplemental modules on medical terminology, assessment and planning, and a 15-hour certification review.

Marie Moore, Chief Nursing Officer of Mercy Springfield Communities, emphasized the significance of building a workforce pipeline to support healthcare needs in southwest Missouri. Moore remarked, “Anytime we can collaborate with our educational leaders like Drury to train the next generation of healthcare professionals, we will. This collaboration with Drury is a great example of what we hope to continue to do.”

Prospective students interested in enrolling in the program can register for the upcoming information session on Monday, March 25 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. in the Catherine McAuley Conference Center, Baggot Street Room at Mercy Hospital at 1235 E Cherokee Street, Springfield, MO 65804. Classes will start on May 1 and end on July 1.
