First Impressions: What You Don’t Say Matters

Think about what you’re doing right now! Let’s start with your posture. Are you hunched over? Leaning back in your chair? Arms folded across your body? Your nonverbal body language says more to others about who you are than your actual words.

The way you present yourself and behave makes a big difference in how people think about you. In only a few seconds, people decide what kind of person you are and if you’re someone they can trust or not. You have to make that first impression count.

Making sure you leave a positive first impression during stressful situations such as an interview or presentation can be stressful in itself. To best overcome your jitters, you should get prepared by knowing your subject and practicing your power pose.

Now, you’re probably asking “What the heck is a power pose and do I really need one?”

A power pose can be used as an effective tool to reduce stress and anxiety. Before heading into a stressful event, go somewhere quiet and pose like Wonder Woman or Captain America!

Yes, I said it. I just told you to make yourself look like a powerful comic book character.

I know it’s silly and you might find it embarrassing. However, when you stand up tall, put your shoulders back and raise your arms above your head or place your hands on your hips, you’re sending a message to your brain saying it’s time to feel powerful and confident. This attitude is something you should carry with you into those interviews or presentations!

You’re in complete control on how you show up. When you are slouched over, arms crossed, and looking down; you’re telling your brain you’re sad, feeling insecure, not confident. You can significantly change the outcome of any stressful situation by taking two to three minutes and practicing your power pose.
