Venice: Water, Culture, and Urban Experience

Drury University > Study Abroad > Venice: Water, Culture, and Urban Experience

Dr. Robert Weddle, Dr. Saundra Weddle

This travel program will help participants develop an understanding of historical and contemporary cities through the example of Venice. The program will present site as a key cultural determinant, so studies will focus on relationships between Venetian history, geography, culture, architecture and art.

The program offers a 9-credit, 5-week study-abroad experience satisfying the Hammons School of Architecture study-abroad requirement. Non-majors and HSA students who have had the requirement waived due to the Covid-19 pandemic (graduating classes of 2023-25) would have the option of attending a shortened 3-week (Venice only) version of this trip, but may also opt for the full 5-weeks (contact program faculty for more information about the 3-week option).

The 5-week program will also satisfy 9 of the 12 required hours for the International Immersion themed certificate. Students seeking this certificate will also need to take (on-campus) SOCI 360 Community Studies either before or after the trip

FUSE 320: Travel Journal

3 credit hours

In this internationally based course, specific study-abroad locations will be examined through disciplined observation, recording, and analysis of the diversity of practices, customs, histories, spatial organizations, and artistic production apparent in the particular study-abroad location. Students will employ written, graphic, and/or artistic methods appropriate to their major field(s) of study in order to observe and present responds to a given location and culture.

FUSE 350: Culture and Place

In this internationally based course, students will develop foundational knowledge and understanding of how specific study-abroad locations are shaped by significant social, cultural, and historical forces and events. Particular emphasis will be given to examining how contemporary place-based qualities connect to broader historical contexts and cultural customs.
