Springfield, Mo., March 21, 2024 – Drury University’s Cyber Defense Club showcased their formidable skills at the recent Midwest Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition, held in Chicago from March 15 – 16. The competition brought together top-tier teams from nine regional states, including state champions and wildcard entrants. Each competitor was the state champion from their respective state as Drury University represented Missouri. Two teams from Illinois and one from Indiana placed ahead of Drury’s team, who finished fourth.

David Durkee, Director of the Midwest Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition Consortium, praised Drury University’s performance: “It was a pleasure having the Drury CCDC Team compete in the 2024 MWCCDC season. Performing well enough to enter the 2024 Erich J. Spengler MWCCDC Regional is noteworthy in and of itself. Undoubtedly, the Drury University Team is among the best CCDC teams in the Midwest.”

Dr. Shannon McMurtrey, Associate Professor of Cyber-risk Management at Drury University, commented, “This year’s team built on the success of previous years by repeating as the top team in Missouri and continuing to climb their way to the top in the Midwest.”

The event attracted sponsors from prestigious organizations such as the National Security Agency, Central Intelligence Agency, Palo Alto, Cisco, Crowdstrike, and Walmart InfoSec among others. While judges noted the team’s effort as they came within a few hundred points of clinching third place, Dr. McMurtrey also expressed excitement about the future endeavors of the Drury team members, anticipating their continued success in their careers and education.

  • Taylor Sloan ’26, Cyber-risk Management major (Overland Park, KS)
  • Ewa Samberger ’25, Cyber-risk Management major (Lublin, Poland)
  • Mark Drozdetckii ’25, Cyber-risk Management major (Lipetsk, Russia)

Their exemplary performance reflects Drury’s commitment to fostering excellence in cybersecurity education and preparing students for real-world challenges.
