SPRINGFIELD, Mo., October 17, 2023 —Drury University is proud to announce a $2 million gift from The Sunderland Foundation, a generous contribution that will establish a dynamic Lyceum space on the second story of Drury’s Olin Library. This innovative and purposeful addition will serve as a vibrant campus public square, fostering a culture of civil discourse and intellectual exchange among Drury students.

This Lyceum space will empower Drury students to put lessons of civil discourse into action, providing a platform where ideas are debated, leaders are inspired and diverse perspectives are celebrated.

“The Lyceum will be a sanctuary, a safe place for ideas to be shared in a civil way between people of differing points of view, continuing a tradition at Drury that dates back to its earliest roots,” said Drury University President John Beuerlein. “It represents our commitment to fostering an environment where students can engage in meaningful dialogue, learn from one another and become proficient in civil discourse on controversial topics.”

The Sunderland Foundation is a philanthropic organization with a long-standing history of investing in the places and spaces where nonprofits make a difference. Established in 1945, their efforts have supported projects that build and renovate facilities where communities come together, where young minds flourish and where individuals in need find solace and support.

Executive Vice President for University Advancement Marie Muhvic expressed her gratitude, saying, “We are immensely thankful to the Sunderland Foundation for their generous gift and their recognition of the profound impact it will have on our students. This gift reflects their commitment to enhancing education and promoting open dialogue and is a testament to the importance of philanthropy in advancing education and nurturing future leaders.”
