Missouri Teacher of the Year, Drury alumna Misty Grandel to speak at Drury on Nov. 19

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., October 31, 2019 — Missouri Teacher of the Year and Drury University alumna Misty Grandel will speak at Drury at 6 p.m., Tuesday, November 19, at Lay Hall Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Grandel graduated in 1990 from Fordland High School and then continued her studies at Drury as an English and Secondary Education major. After her graduation from Drury, she began her teaching career. Three years later, she received a call from Fordland High about a teaching position. Grandel also earned a Master of Communication degree from Drury in 2004.

Grandel has been teaching at Fordland for 21 years. She teaches English, advanced placement language and composition, yearbook and journalism, Spanish, and dual credit speech and leadership. She has also been an advocate for bringing Advanced Placement programs to Fordland High School, in an effort to give students an edge in college admissions and scholarships.

“I’m thrilled to be returning to Drury University, where I was given such an excellent foundation both for teaching and for life,” Grandel says. “I look forward to sharing how my experiences at Drury shaped so much of who I am today; as well, I’m excited to speak with teacher candidates regarding the field of education and the joy that being a member of the profession has brought me.”

“The School of Education and Child Development is thrilled to welcome Misty back to campus to share her education journey,” says Dr. Shannon Cuff, dean of the school of education. “Future and current teachers as well as community members are fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from an exceptional educator.”
