Challenge raises nearly a quarter of a million dollars for Drury scholarships in three weeks

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., April 13, 2018 —Drury University alumni and friends donated a total of $244,350 to support student scholarships and financial aid in just a few weeks as part of the university’s inaugural “Match Madness” fundraising challenge.

The campaign began with a matching challenge of $100,000 from the O’Reilly, Wooten, and Stout families. The families challenged alumni to donate $1,000 – either individually or in teams of up to four people. Each donor or team of donors then were asked to pick winners in the NCAA men’s and women’s Division I basketball tournament. The top picks in the brackets were then entered into drawings to have a single-year scholarship named in their honor.

Drury donors got in on the madness to the tune of $144,350, in addition to the original $100,000 match. In all, there were 31 new merit- and need-based scholarships created, ranging in value from $3,000 to $17,000, as well as one full-tuition scholarship. All of the donations supported the Annual Drury Experience Fund, which seeks to raise $1.5 million each year for dedicated students in Drury’s undergraduate, graduate, and evening and online programs.

“I’m thrilled with the response and support for the Match Madness challenge, and grateful for the donors who took part,” says Drury President Dr. Tim Cloyd. “Over the last two years, I have challenged our community to demonstrate their passion for Drury’s mission to transform lives by increasing our Annual Fund giving. That is exactly what’s happening. Generosity and passion are contagious, and we’re seeing our donors step up and give back to the next generation of incredible Drury alumni.”

Annual fundraising at Drury increased by nearly 25 percent last fiscal year, as gifts and commitments totaling $9,416,023 were made to the institution compared to $7,540,529 the prior year. Drury will again close out its fundraising year with the fifth annual “531 Challenge”to boost donor participation during the month of May.
