Chris Singleton brings message of unity, forgiveness to Drury University on Oct. 14
SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Sept. 16, 2019 — Chris Singleton, a former Chicago Cubs minor league player and inspirational speaker, is the guest at this year’s Joseph H. George Distinguished Lecture. His public talk will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, October 14 at Clara Thompson Hall.

Singleton captivates his audiences by sharing of his personal stories and experiences of adversity. His message is summed up by his mantra, “Love is stronger than hate,” and he has put that mantra into action by publicly forgiving the man who murdered his mother. Singleton has traveled the country and has spoken to tens of thousands of students and young adults. He has also spread his message through national media outlets such as ESPN’s E:60, Sports Illustrated magazine, CNN, and USA Today.

The Joseph H. George Distinguished Lecture Series was established to provide thoughtful discussion about the principles of servant leadership and raising up servant leaders. It honors the legacy of Joseph H. George II, a lifelong resident of Springfield and grandson of Dr. Joseph H. George, Sr., Drury’s fifth president (1907-1913). Joseph H. George II exemplified the principles of servant leadership as a Naval Officer in World War II, businessman and Rotary Club member of more than 50 years. He was also a devoted community volunteer who dedicated thousands of hours to his church, the YMCA, AAU athletics, and the Boy Scouts.
The lecture series is made possible by the generosity of Susan and Walt N. George. Walt is a member of Drury’s Board of Trustees and the son of Joseph H. George II.
