Drury University sees 12 percent undergraduate enrollment increase over three years
SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Aug. 23, 2018 — Drury University’s traditional undergraduate enrollment has grown 12 percent over the last three years, thanks to yet another robust incoming class of freshman who arrived this week.
There were 1,476 students on campus when classes began on Tuesday, compared to 1,425 last year. Of those, 478 were freshmen and new transfer students – a 4 percent increase over last year’s class. Students are coming to Drury from the Springfield region as well as metro areas such as St. Louis, Kansas City and Dallas. Drury also saw jumps in enrollment from downstate Illinois, rural Missouri, Arkansas and Texas.
Additionally, new international student enrollment is up slightly – notable given that many colleges nationwide are experiencing dips in international enrollment this year due to political headwinds.
True to tradition, Drury’s incoming class maintains a strong academic profile on par with recent years, including a GPA average of 3.85, an ACT average of 26, and three National Merit Scholar finalists among the first-year class.
All data is preliminary and based on opening week head counts. Drury’s census day is Friday, Sept. 7 and final enrollment totals will be available the following week.
“We couldn’t be more pleased with the incoming class and with the trendline for the university over the last few years,” says Kevin Kropf, executive vice president for enrollment management. “It’s been a whole-school effort: faculty, staff, our current students, and our support from leadership. We’ve put a lot of stock in telling the story that a Drury education truly blends preparation for both a student’s career and their life. That story is connecting.”
Another aspect of the story is Drury’s focus on pitching Springfield as Missouri’s premiere city for college students, including recent rankings as a top city for affordability, job growth, and outdoor adventure.
“We recognize that Springfield is a destination for college students and offers the amenities they’re looking for,” Kropf says. “As part of our campus visits, we want them to see all of the great dining, entertainment, and cultural options that are available to them.”
University officials expect interest in Drury to continue to grow in the next few years, as the school prepares to launch a new academic platform in the fall of 2019. More details about that initiative – which has been more than two years in the making – will be released later this fall.
