HIST 214: Global Socialisms in Film

3 hours

The course will explore the history of global Socialism through film across the world. By exploring the different aesthetics of global film, we will compare and contrast socialisms in the Soviet Bloc, East Asia, and Latin America. We will also explore the ideological, political, and social changes that one third of the world’s population experienced living under socialism in the 20th century. We will explore socialism not simply as an ideology, but as a lived experience for millions of people around the world, with a focus on youth, counter-culture, and daily life. Finally the course explores life after socialism across the world through film and the ways in which film depicts the struggles of life after the collapse of the Berlin Wall.
