Chocolate University is an international business immersion initiative of Askinosie Chocolate and Drury University. Chocolate University engages local high school students through the lens of artisan chocolate making and small business entrepreneurship. The mission of Chocolate University is "to inspire students to become global citizens and understand that businesses can solve world problems."
All materials necessary for the application to be reviewed by the selection committee (essay, letters of recommendation, financial information for scholarship consideration) are due September, 30, 2019 at 5 p.m..
Selection: Applications are evaluated by a selection committee including employees of Askinosie Chocolate, Drury University, and Springfield Public Schools. Select applicants will be invited to an in person interview in mid-late October. All applications will be accepted or declined by November 15.
Eligibility: Applicants must be members of the graduating class of 2020 or 2021 and a current public, private or homeschool student residing in Greene or Christian County.
Availability: Applicants agree to be available for program orientation in December 2019 and 5 mandatory pre-trip meetings to be scheduled during after school hours in January - May 2020. Applicants must also be available to attend a 3-5 day on-campus experience at Drury University and 10-12 days of travel to/from Tanzania in July 2020. Key date schedule will be shared at the December orientation. Exact travel dates will be determined by March 1, 2020.

Please type a brief (no longer than 500 words) essay that details a personal or professional goal you have set for yourself; any experiences you have already undertaken (in school, in your community, or via international travel) in pursuit of this goal; and the role that the Chocolate University program would play to further support your goal.
Please include three letters of reference as a part of your application. One of your letters should be from a recent teacher or counselor at your school. Sponsors from one of the activities you describe in this application are preferable.
Fees for this experience (meetings, travel) are estimated to total $4,000. This amount is due in full at the December 2019 orientation session. The fee is payable to The Askinosie Foundation dba Chocolate University. The fee is not tax deductible. Chocolate University offers full scholarships (no partial) to applicants seeking need-based financial aid. To assess financial need, please be prepared to submit additional household financial information to validate your family's financial position. All financial information will be kept confidential. A copy of your household 2018 tax return will be required at the time of your interview if applying for scholarships. Approximately half of each Chocolate University class will be awarded a full scholarship.
Note, many Chocolate University applicants seek scholarship support. Scholarship applications are evaluated against a larger pool of applications. Please only apply for the scholarship if you are financially unable to pay for the trip without a scholarship.
