President’s Day of Service

Join us for a day of service as part of President Manuel’s Installation Week.  Service projects will be offered throughout the day.  See below for project descriptions.  Deadline to sign-up is Sunday, September 15.

To sign up for any of these projects you can:

  • Come to our office in FSC 117.
  • Call us at 873-6803.
  • Send us an email at
  • If you sign up for a project it is important that you follow through.  The community partners will be expecting you.
  • Many of these shifts, but not all of them, can be shortened if you cannot stay the entire time.  These projects are marked with an asterisk (*).  We do ask that you be able to be there for the beginning of each project as nonprofit partners will be giving instructions. 

If you are interested in partnering with a different nonprofit than what we have organized, please contact us to discuss your interest. 

We’d love to see and share your volunteer efforts so please send us a picture of your service and we’ll include it on Facebook with our other photos.

The day will culminate with a Celebration of Service and Student Welcome to our new President sponsored by SUB, starting at 4:30 on the Kellogg Green Space and ending at 7:00 pm.  This celebration will include tasty treats, fun activities, and student musical performances.  Commons will be serving dinner outside for students on the meal plan.  Bring your friends, family, and a pair of shoes to donate in support of Stomp Out Hunger.

Classes will be in session so students interested in participating should make appropriate arrangements with their faculty prior to signing up to serve.

Staff wishing to participate can use the Community Connection Leave policy for paid time to volunteer with a supervisor’s approval.

Projects offered on 9/18:
Unless otherwise noted, you are responsible for your own transportation.  Once you sign-up, we will email you the necessary waivers to volunteer as well as additional information regarding each project.

Project 1       9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – Work at Ozarks Food Harvest helping sort, organize, and repackage food for those in need.  Must have a minimum of 15 people sign up for this project to take place. You must be able to work the entire shift.

Project 2*      *9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. – Help the Urban Agriculture Coalition run an educational gardening class at one of their school garden sites.

Project 3*      *12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. – Work at the Ronald McDonald House located next to Cox South Hospital.  Volunteers will be helping with cleaning, organizing, and decorating projects. 

Project 4*      *12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. – Work at the Ronald McDonald House located inside Mercy Hospital.  Volunteers will be helping with cleaning, organizing, and decorating projects. 

Project 5       12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. – Join Drury architecture professors (you don’t have to be an architecture student….the service is landscaping type projects), Traci Sooter and Nancy Chikaraishi, and help with landscaping projects in Joplin as part of the ongoing rebuilding efforts from the 2011.  Learn about the Volunteer Tribute Drury students designed and built as well as Drury’s latest effort to create an open space of recovery and healing at Cunningham Park.   A bus will be departing from Drury at 12:30 and will be returning at 5:30 so transportation is provided for this project.

Project 6*      *11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. – Help with maintenance projects at the Musgrave Unit Boys and Girls ClubThis event is an open event, meaning volunteers can come and go as they please, but should still sign up through our office to receive directions, and additional information.  Volunteers do NOT have to be at the start of this event.

Project 7*      *1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. – Help the PTA clothing bank sort and organize their clothing donations. 

Project 8*      *2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. - Help the Rutlidge Wilson Farm Park get ready for its annual Fall Festival! Projects include maintenance work and landscaping.

Project 9       3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. – Join us as we perform a street clean-up of the Mid-town neighborhood (a.k.a. Drury’s neighborhood). 

Project 10*   *4:00 to 4:30 – Join teenagers from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Springfield in FSC 204 as we make Hope Notes for the Backpack Program of Ozarks Food Harvest.  Hope Notes are notes of encouragement for the youth who participate in the Backpack Program of Ozarks Food Harvest.  Each week, youth take home a backpack full of food to help nourish them over the weekend.  A Hope Note is included in each backpack.

Project 11       1:30-4:30. – Assist the United Way of the Ozarks with an important mailing campaign (collating, stuffing envelopes, etc…).
