Free Microsoft Anti-Virus for Students and Home Users
We highly recommend our students and home users use the new Microsoft Security Essentials which is a free download for Windows XP, Vista and 7 users.
You will need to remove all other anti-virus software after installing Microsoft Security Essentials.
It will help defend your computer against both viruses and spyware. An overwhelmingly large portion of Windows users do not use security software either due to the complication or cost. Malware has the potential to both damage your data and share it with identity thieves. Microsoft Security Essentials has real-time protection and runs efficiently in the background without eating up system resources. Yet it manages to accurately detect malware almost as well as an expensive product such as McAfee’s VirusScan Plus and Symantec’s Norton AntiVirus.
Microsoft Security Essentials is very convenient. The installer file size varies between a 5-10MB download based on which version of Windows you are running. The installation process is simple and quick.
If you don’t have any anti-virus or anti-spyware protection software running on your computer, there’s no excuse to not try Microsoft’s free solution.

What is spyware?
Spyware is software that typically "piggybacks" on other software that has been downloaded from the internet. This includes P2P programs, such as Limewire or Shareaza, free games, and other shareware or freeware applications found on the internet. The basic purpose of spyware is to collect information about the user, such as browsing and download habits, and report them back to the software vendor. This information is typically used to target advertisements to the user. Though it sounds fairly harmless, albeit invasive, spyware can have a negative impact on your computer, which will lead to lock-ups, unexpected crashes, system-wide slowdown, reduced speed on the internet, browser hijacks, and other frustrating hassles.
If you suspect you might have spyware installed on your computer, we advise that you download and install Ad-aware, Spybot, and Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta (unlike having two anti-virus applications on your computer at once, having two spyware removal utilities will not harm your computer and will actually increase the likelihood of removing all the spyware on your computer). Make a regular habit of scanning and updating the software to ensure that your system is free of spyware. This will help ensure your computer is running as fast and securely as it can.
