The Heart of Spain

Summer 2019 Program
Tony Smith

This five-week program in Spain will immerse students in Spanish language and culture in the heart of the country. Through studies at the University of Valladolid, one of Europe’s oldest universities, and excursions to various locations in central and northern Spain, students will take part in a completely immersive cultural experience as they gain confidence in their Spanish language skills. They will have the special opportunity to live with host families during their time in the city of Valladolid, and will also get to travel to some of the most important destinations in this area of the country.

Students will learn about the modern culture and history of Spain through presentations and discussions as well as through city tours and visits of museums, churches, and castles. They will be given the chance to interact with the local culture by visiting places such as supermarkets, restaurants, cafés, and shops and practicing their language skills in a wide array of everyday situations. They will also be given important exposure to residential life during their homestay as they spend four weeks in a familial environment, which will be essential to helping them gain linguistic confidence with the Spanish language

Outside of their homestay and studies in Valladolid, students will visit other cities in central and northern Spain such as Segovia, Salamanca, Leon, Santander, and Toledo. The last several days of the program will be spent in Madrid, a city with which the Drury faculty leader has extensive experience. The final days in the capital will give participants the opportunity to experience museums, plazas, tapas culture, urban transportation, and numerous other aspects of big city life.

In addition to fulfilling requirements for the Spanish major and minor, the program fulfills the PDEV 205 Engaged Learning credit and study abroad requirement for Breech Business students.
