Lia Southern is originally from Cali, Colombia. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Bassoon Performance from Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá, as a student of Mr. Sigfried Miklin. While in Colombia, she played with four prestigious national orchestras: Orquesta Filarmonica de Bogota, Orquesta Sinfonica de Colombia, Orquesta de la Opera de Colombia and Orquesta Sinfonica del Valle, and also taught bassoon at the Javeriana University. After graduation, she earned a coveted scholarship to attend the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, Canada. Lia Southern earned her Master of Music degree from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville under the tutelage of Dr. Richard Ramey. Presently she is completing her doctoral work at the University of Kansas, where she studies with Dr. Eric Stomberg. Her international work includes performances and festivals in Colombia, Canada, Costa Rica, Finland, Germany, Puerto Rico and Ecuador and multiple venues in the United States. In addition, Lia shares her love of music as an instructor at Drury and Missouri State Universities and the Ozarks Technical Community College in Springfield. She performs on regular basis with Springfield-Drury Civic Orchestra, Springfield Symphony Orchestra, Springfield Symphony Quintet, Ensemble 21, Symphony Orchestra of Northwest Arkansas, and Fort Smith Orchestra.
