Resume Assistance

How to market yourself!

It is very important to make a good first impression, and a variety of marketing tools may be used to provide a positive first impression. Marketing tools can include: Resumes; Cover Letters; Portfolios; Thank You Notes; and even your answering machine (be sure you have an appropriate message because potential employers could be calling). Basically, any type of correspondence with a potential employer/grad school is a marketing tool...it's your chance to market yourself.

Resources are available in the Career Center to assist you. Pick up a free copy of Job Search Strategies, a guide compiled by the Career Center that includes resume FAQ's, examples, and a worksheet. Feel free to schedule an appointment with Career Center staff if you have any questions or need assistance. To check out online resume resources, visit College Central Network or JobWeb to learn about resume formats and to see samples and visit the E-Resume section for guidelines on e-mailing resumes and posting resumes electronically. Please note that there are many styles/formats of resumes and there is no set right or wrong way of writing a resume. Be sure to pay attention to every little detail. Be sure your resume is consistent, with no grammatical or spelling errors and try not to abbreviate. Typically, resumes should be one page for recent college graduates and students.
