Learn more about spyware & download detection software
What is spyware? Spyware is software that typically "piggybacks" on other software that has been downloaded from the internet. This includes P2P programs, such as Limewire or Shareaza, free games, and other shareware or freeware applications found on the internet. The basic purpose of spyware is to collect information about the user, such as browsing and download habits, and report them back to the software vendor. This information is typically used to target advertisements to the user. Though it sounds fairly harmless, albeit invasive, spyware can have a negative impact on your computer, which will lead to lock-ups, unexpected crashes, system-wide slowdown, reduced speed on the internet, browser hijacks, and other frustrating hassles.
If you suspect you might have spyware installed on your computer, we advise that you download and install Ad-aware, Spybot, and Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta (unlike having two anti-virus applications on your computer at once, having two spyware removal utilities will not harm your computer and will actually increase the likelihood of removing all the spyware on your computer). Make a regular habit of scanning and updating the software to ensure that your system is free of spyware. This will help ensure your computer is running as fast and securely as it can.
