About the Pre-Podiatry Program

Undergraduate students interested in the podiatry field often major in biology, chemistry, or both. Podiatry is a program and is not considered a major. A bachelor’s degree is recommended but not required prior to matriculation into podiatry school.

Podiatrists are responsible for examining, diagnosing, and treating diseases and problems of the foot and the ankle. These treatments include both orthopedic and surgical corrections. Often a serious problem with the foot or ankle can indicate a disease or disorder, such as diabetes. Therefore, Doctors of Podiatric Medicine, or D.P.M., must be highly trained individuals that can understand and identify these connections. Podiatrists will treat patients suffering from such things as gout, poor circulation, arthritis, and diabetes. Once accepted into podiatry school, students will participate in in-class lectures during their first two years, and then be exposed to clinical experiences during their final two years. In order to be accepted to podiatry school, students must take the MCAT, a standardized test used to assess a student's scientific knowledge.
