November 3 – 28, 2006
From Rogers, AR: Painting
Opening Reception: Friday, November 3, 7–9 pm Artist Talk: Friday, November 3, 6–7 pm
Utopian and celebrant of the sensual and exotic, the mythical and magical, Juan Torres-Zavala's paintings refer to an innovative spirit that encompasses a vibrant panorama of the creator's aesthetic and artistic maturity drawn from his heritage, religious formation and philosophical theories Born in Mexico, Torres-Zavala has been described as a restless artist whose images must be approached by the viewer with nothing less than an open mind and an understanding that cognitive perceptions of truth shall be altered. How the sensual thing is related with the grotesque, the playfulness with the cruel, the real with the unreal, the past with the present; Torres-Zavala integrates those contradictions into his works of art.
Juan Torres-Zavala has shown his work in numerous galleries and museums including the Museo de Regional in Queretaro, Mexico, the Cultural Institute of Guanajuato City, Mexico, the Museum of Modern Art in Queretaro City, Mexico, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Morelia City, Mexico, Agora Gallery in New York City, the University of Arkansas, Gallery Mikhel in Seattle, and the William J. Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas.
