Art of Space

About the Group
Art of Space creates temporary, highly interactive environmental art installations on the Drury campus and at various locations in Springfield for Artsfest and First Friday Art Walks as spatial embodiments of community. Art of Space celebrates the vitality of Springfield through a communal process of making spatial art, inviting all members of the community to participate in the revitalization of Springfield's urban districts. As counterpoint to the art commodification that typifies First Friday Art Walk and Artsfest, Art of Space provides opportunities to participate in the construction of innovative spaces conceived in the spirit of inclusion, interaction and aesthetic immersion, fostering uplifting experiences analogous to community barn-raisings, privileging the creation of wonder and supportive social relationships over utility as a form of civic engagement. Design concepts and methods take advantage of the modularity, availability, flexibility and costs of common materials ,that have an immediate connection to everyday lives. Each installation utilizes techniques that encourage participants to design the work as they build, coordinating individual efforts as a group towards a shared goal.
