Drury to host memorial service for Lifetime Trustee Ben Parnell

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Aug. 5, 2010 — A memorial service to remember the life of Drury Lifetime Trustee Ben Parnell Jr. will be held on Friday, Aug. 6 at 2 p.m. in Stone Chapel. Parnell died on Monday, Aug. 2 at the age of 91. Parnell is the father of Drury President Todd Parnell.

Parnell Jr. attended Drury College from 1935-1937 after graduating from Branson High School. He later earned a bachelor's degree from Louisiana State University in 1939, and spent five years in the U.S. Navy, including three years of duty in Europe and the Pacific during World War II. In 1950, Parnell Jr. and his father founded Peoples Bank of Branson. During his banking career, Parnell Jr. granted the loan that made Silver Dollar City a reality, and he petitioned the federal government for the construction of Table Rock Dam.

During his time as a Drury student, Parnell met Jean Hogg whom he married in 1946. Mrs. Parnell died in 2006. Ben Parnell Jr. served as a Drury Trustee from 1964-71 and again in 1983. He was named a Drury Lifetime Trustee in 1995.
