Professor develops Drury’s first iPhone application to coincide with certification program

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., March 5, 2010 — Drury students have a new way to get plugged in, thanks to the university’s first iPhone application. The tool will serve as an interface for students in the Social Media Certification (SMC) class wishing to follow faculty blog and twitter accounts as they prepare for the class in June. Dr. Curt Gilstrap, director of the master in communication program, designed the iPhone application.

Faculty members in Drury’s Communication Department have been working hard on the certification since its unveiling last fall. It’s a one-of-a-kind, two-week workshop designed to offer students hands on activities in marketing, media management, entrepreneurship and culture. Gilstrap hopes his SMC iPhone application will help keep students updated about the workshop and encourage interaction with faculty members.

“The SMC application should serve as both an interface and a talking point for students and faculty,” Gilstrap says. “It’s also going to be incorporated as a teaching tool during the actual certification.”

If all goes well, there might be another application in the future. But for now, Drury’s first iPhone application is free and available to the public through iTunes. For more information about the application or the Social Media Certification class, contact Dr. Gilstrap at (417) 873-4068 or
