SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Aug. 5, 2009
— Drury University will confer degrees to 169 graduates at the Summer 2009 commencement ceremonies at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, in the Findlay Student Center.

Melinda Hammerschmidt, a recent graduate of Drury’s College of Graduate and Continuing Studies, will address the students. Hammerschmidt graduated from Drury with a master’s in education in August of 2008 with a 4.0 grade point average. One of Hammerschmidt’s three sons, Robert, will be among the graduates in the audience on August 15. He’s earning an undergraduate degree in psychology.

“Melinda’s effective interpersonal skills ‘sparkle,’ ” says Dr. Dan Beach, acting dean of the College of Graduate and Continuing studies and one of Ms. Hammerschmidt’s former professors. “She is outgoing, thoughtful of others, demonstrates a positive attitude and is oriented toward helping others rather than herself. As a recent master’s recipient and the mother of a graduate, Melinda has a unique perspective to share with this class.”

Melinda Hammerschmidt is a former schoolteacher in Arkansas, and has been an active volunteer in Springfield Public Schools with a special emphasis in reading.
