SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Feb. 25, 2009 — On Wednesday, March 11, Drury University will host two sessions of oral arguments before the Missouri Court of Appeals in Clara Thompson Hall. The Court will hear two cases: one at 9 a.m. and the other at 10:30 a.m.

This is the first time the Missouri Court of Appeals has heard cases on the Drury campus. “It is an honor for the Missouri Court of Appeals to sit at Drury and give our students insight into the appellate process which is the source of the common law system,” says Janis Prewitt Auner, an assistant professor of management, who teaches business law at Drury University.

“The opportunity to have the court conduct its proceedings at Drury came about after some of the appellate court judges presided over a moot court exercise in my Constitutional Law class,” says Ponder, Drury associate professor of Political Science. “The arguments that will be heard are actual, pending cases, and all protocol and procedure will be followed. We want to stress that these are NOT moot court arguments, but the real thing.”

One of the cases the court will hear involves jury instructions regarding a driving while intoxicated conviction. The other case addresses the issue of marital versus non-marital property in a divorce proceeding.

The court proceedings are open to all Drury students, faculty and staff along with the general public. Any media outlets that wish to use photographic, video or audio recording equipment to record the proceedings should contact the court's media coordinator at least 5 days prior to the March 11 court date. The media coordinator is: Gene Hartley, KYTV, P.O. Box 3500, Springfield, Mo. 65807. Hartley can be contacted by phone at: (417) 268-3264.
