Jesus and His Disciples This presentation is by MSU Religious Professor Dr. Victor Matthews. Jesus gathers and then uses his disciples as a sounding board for his theology and as an intimate group in the midst of a sea of strangers. When they fail to understand him or his mission, that gives Jesus the chance to instruct them and us.

Memory and Space in the Old Testament Dr. Victor Matthews will talk about how The Old Testament narratives are filled with stories about particular places and the memories that are created by these encounters. The question becomes how these memories are used to spark or add authority of later stories set in the same places.

Argonauts, Apaches and Texans: The Civil War in Arizona If the title of this presentation surprised you, you're in good company: the story of the Civil War in Arizona is still a relatively unknown one. In this presentation, Todd Wilkinson will tell the story of many colorful characters, North and South, who struggled for control of Arizona Territory during the War Between the States.

MSU Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Brian Calfano will make this presentation. Persuasion and motivation are the core ingredients of successful campaigns, where they're intended to win over public opinion on an issue or garner votes for a candidate. The lead up to the 2012 election presents us with an opportunity to observe a variety of political marketing strategies aimed at persuasion and motivation. After this talk, you may never view campaigns, candidates, and political "information" the same way again!

“Medical Uses of Stem Cell Therapy” Drury Professor Dr. Roger Young and his students will discuss the treatment of a wide array of medical issues that have been promised by the panacea of Stem Cell Therapy. In this presentation, we review the ethical debate in utilizing stem cells and the recent genetic advances that have modified this discussion and laid the foundation for practical applications of such treatment.

This presentation will be made by MSU Library Science Professor Emeritus Carol Lynne Freeman. In the late 1800's there was a reaction to the increasingly poor quality of printed materials. Some printers ignored the technological advances and went back to the art of the hand printed book, using early printers like Aldus and William Caxton as models.

“Christmas in Wartime” Dr. Louise Jackson will make this presentation. Even in the midst of war, Americans have always found ways to celebrate Christmas. Louise will highlight a few Christmas practices in American wars from the Revolution to Vietnam, including at least one carol that was particularly popular in each conflict.

"Because you Care, our Students can Learn" In 2008, Doug Pitt founded Care to Learn to meet the emergent needs of Springfield students in the areas of health, hunger and hygiene. Three years later, Care to Learn has met more than 50,000 needs and is serving southwest Missouri. Learn how Doug and a staff of one is meeting the growing needs of students living in poverty.

“Drury at 139” Drury University President Todd Parnell will discuss one of his passions, the 139th anniversary of Drury University. Parnell graduated from Drury University in 1969. He then went on to earn his Master’s in Business Administration from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 1971. On January 1, 2008 Todd was named Drury’s 16th President.

“Our China Trip” Dr. Allin Sorenson, Drury University Music Chair, will make this presentation along with some of his students. In May, they got back from a two week trip to China in which they performed and learned a lot about the country. They will share this experience with us.
