Academic Computing

Academic Computing exists to coordinate and plan for the entire university’s needs in the area of information technology for academic applications.

The Director of Academic Computing is appointed by the Provost from the teaching faculty and is provided release time compensation for the duties of the office. The Director represents the office on technology committees or councils as provided by the Provost.

The Academic Computing Advisory Committee consists of faculty and student representatives from the institution.

The Director of Academic Computing works with the Director of Computer Services to coordinate the implementation of hardware and software and to enforce and implement technology policies.

The office of Academic Computing serves the following needs:

  • Provides long-range planning for the institution’s academic information technology needs.
  • Implements short-term plans to provide for the immediate needs consistent with its long-term goals.
  • Prepares an annual budget request for the following academic year to provide for new hardware and software for hardware and software upgrades, faculty development, administrative costs and additional programs.
  • Allocates financial and physical resources in the area of academic information technology consistent with the long- and short-term goals.
  • Develops and reviews policies for the use of information technology at the institution.
  • Encourages, stimulates, and cultivates the use of technology as a teaching and learning tool.
  • Provides training and development for the faculty, in order to increase the faculty’s awareness and capabilities in the use of technology in the teaching and learning process.
  • Provides guidance to the academic departments in implementing the use of technology to improve the teaching and learning process.
  • Coordinates technology needs with the Computer Services, Administrative Computing, and Web Services departments where needs overlap.
  • Consults with Provost and Vice-president for Administration on capital budget requests involving technology.
