Fall 2013 New Transfer Student Information

My name is Emily Givens, and I am the Director of Transitional Programs. My main focus is to make sure all new students – freshmen, transfers and internationals – have a smooth transition into the Drury community. Advising and Registration
Beginning in April, students who are admitted and have paid the tuition and housing deposits ($100 tuition deposit and $200 housing deposit for those planning to live on campus) should contact Tony Perrin, Director of Transfer Admissions at (417) 873-7205 or aperrin@drury.edu to schedule an advising and registration appointment. Students will meet one-on-one with an academic advisor to build an appropriate schedule for the fall semester. A first-semester class schedule will be created to help students achieve educational goals, without the stress that sometimes accompanies the registration and advising process.

DU Bridge Program
DU Bridge is organized through the Office of Diversity Support Services. The program will be held Wednesday, August 14 – Friday morning, August 16 - two days before the start of Transfer Student Orientation. The primary focus is to give our incoming students of color an opportunity to build connections and accelerate friendships, meet influential people in the community and on campus who can make their initial college experience a positive one. We plan on having many fun activities planned as well! This program is free - we simply need students to pre-register! DU Bridge Registration Form

Transfer Student Orientation
Transfer Student Orientation will be held Friday, August 16 – Monday, August 19, 2013 and is strongly recommended for all new transfer students. Some of the events students will participate in are: bowling, ice skating and broomball, an off-campus community service event, dinner with Drury faculty members, student activities fair, a huge fireworks show, and much more! This is a great opportunity for new members of the Drury community to get to know both new and returning Drury students!

Orientation Leaders
Orientation Leaders will be present throughout the four days of orientation to assist new students by answering questions, providing guidance and providing information about what to expect once classes begin on Monday, August 19 at 5 p.m.

Student Activities Fair
This event is held the third day of Transfer Student Orientation. The purpose of the fair is to encourage students to sign up for campus organizations, clubs and groups early on, before classes begin. There are over 90 student organizations available for Drury students to choose from.

First-year Advising and Mentoring (FAM Program)A retention and mentoring program that links new Drury students with a FAM leader and a team of representatives from seven key areas that shape the Drury experience:

  • Academic Advising
  • Business Office
  • Campus Activities
  • Career Planning and Development
  • Financial Aid
  • Housing
  • Work Study

Each FAM leader will be a full time staff member representing departments throughout Drury’s campus. A FAM group will consist of approximately 10 first-year students who will be randomly placed in a particular group. A FAM group will meet their leader for the first time in early September. Each group will meet at least one more time each semester as a group. There will also be a communication process through our Drury email system of important events, items and deadlines. The FAM leader will acquire the tools and referral skills to assist their FAM students in critical key areas which have been proven to influence student satisfaction, success and retention. CORE 104
This 0.5-credit course is required for all transfer students in their first semester at Drury, helping them connect with academic and co-curricular opportunities. There will be at least two group meetings and two one-on-one meetings with the instructor, with follow-up assignments tracked through Blackboard.

Office of Transitional Programs
The first year of college often presents students with new challenges as they face the academic and personal transitions required of them. This office, located in Findlay Student Center 120, serves as a resource for students who would like to discuss and resolve any issues that are preventing them from succeeding at Drury. We can assist students with goal setting, time management, academic concerns, and personal issues. We are here to listen, offer advice, point out new alternatives, and understand the exciting times and difficulties that lie ahead.
