Many Drury University students who study abroad each year serve the university as Study Abroad Correspondents for the Mirror, Drury's student newspaper. The following are some reports written and submitted by students studying at the Drury Center in Volos, Greece.

History offers moving experience
by Jatanna Gatewood

"As a class, we enter at the upper gate. We pass the house of the one man still clinging to the hillside life. Immediately behind his house is the gate to the middle city. The holds from the door hinges and lock are still evident."

The Temple of Poseidon
by Jatanna Gatewood

"We climb yet another hill, following yet another path worn smooth and slick by use. Turn a corner and suddenly there it is, the Temple of Poseidon."

A Great Big World
by Cecily Miller

" ... when he wrote "I've got the world on a string". Was he fully aware of how big this world is? Because I am not sure that I was until recently. It's been two weeks since I left for Greece and I think I have learned more in these weeks about myself, the world, people, and life in general, than I have in all my 21 years!

Saying Farewell to Greece
By Amy Hungerford

" ... I wish I could bring each of you here with me. Show you around. Point out beautiful views of the sea I will miss so terribly, and the mountains I know I will look for in vain in the Springfield skyline ..."

Extended Vacation
By Amy Hungerford

" ... It would seem that Greece's university system is caught with no good way to better itself. One can only hope that as Greece becomes increasingly involved in a global society, that they are forced to implement a system of accountability for these professors ..."

Italy: A Taste of Home?
By Amy Hungerford

" ... Drury, I know you are changing just as much as I am; life always goes on, whether we are there to witness it or not. But if I could ask just one tiny favor or you, it would be this: save some room for me ..."

Student Finds Connection Between Spiritual and Physical in Greek Orthodox Church
By Amy Hungerford

" ... The service was fairly long, a couple of hours I think, but I don't remember ever looking at my watch. I was completely captivated by the sound of the voices, the smell of incense, and the beautiful mosaics around me ..."

In Turkey, Haggling Is an Art Form
By Jason Hudspeth

" ... The 13 hour bus ride was just a little long, but it turned out to be well worth the time. Istanbul, Turkey is not the place I expected it to be. The city is dotted with mosques. Their minarets soar above the skyline like giant toothpicks ..."

The Most Memorable Experience
By Shane Aaron

" ... After a rousing tale of his love for America, he draped a t-shirt depicting the body of a Greek god over my shoulders and took my picture. Then, with the daring boldness only a European could have, he reached his hand into my front pocket and dropped an out-of-circulation Euro penny inside ..."

Climbing Up to Look Down
By Emilee Hudson

" ... As a student who has traveled abroad prior to this voyage, Greece has reiterated the importance of seeing, learning and experiencing first hand rather than settling for photographs and text and images in books ..."

Not Open 24 Hours? It's Greek to Me
By Liz Aiello

" ... They run their bakery, key shop or shoe store, the best they can and take quality time to enjoy life. No one works on Sundays or holidays, and especially not from 2 to 5 p.m.. when everyone takes a nap after lunch. Another characteristic of life that I have noticed is that the people here are not as driven to outperform their neighbor ..."
