This interdisciplinary course meets for three weeks in St. Petersburg, Russia. The class combines the efforts of Drury University, Seton Hall University, and St. Petersburg University. Classroom sessions, taught by local professors, cover Russian history, culture, and introduction to Russian Language. Out of class educational experiences, led by two American professors with the frequent assistance of local tour guides, include excursions of theatres, cathedrals, palaces, and a variety of museums.
We will also guide you off the beaten path of tourists to events as diverse as a walk through the back alleys described by Dostoyevsky, a boat trip to an island populated only by monks, strolls along the beach of the Gulf of Finland, and possibly even peruse a local prison. All of these events unfold beneath the beautiful perpetual daylight of the season of St. Petersburg known as the White Nights.
Most of the learning will take place outside the classroom as we explore the city of St. Petersburg. Therefore, it is suggested to finish the required reading assignments before leaving for Russia. Minimizing time spent studying inside allows for more exploration of St. Petersburg, both with the class and in your own small groups. The ultimate course objective encompasses absorbing as much Russian culture as humanly possible in the three weeks in St. Petersburg. On a smaller scale, we study St. Petersburg’s place as the cultural capital of Russia and its historical importance as the cradle of the Russian Revolution.
