Egypt Winter 2010 Study Abroad Program

Egypt Winter Term 2009-10

This program combines a study of ancient Egyptian history with contemporary Egyptian culture. The course is designed as experiential learning, with all class meetings focusing on visiting ancient Egyptian sites as well as important sites for contemporary Egyptian culture. The program is open to students of all majors and minors. They will immerse themselves in the daily lives of Egyptians, while studying the history of Ancient Egypt’s kingdoms through readings, lectures and site visits that include:

  • The Great Pyramids of Giza
  • Sakkara, cemetery and first step pyramid
  • The Valley of the Kings
  • Luxor
  • Edfu, the Ptolemy’s Temple to Horus
  • Temple of Hatshepsut, Egypt’s Queen-Pharoah
  • Temple at Karnak near Thebes
  • Abu Simbel, the temple of Ramses II
  • Cairo Museum
  • Alexandria: New Library, Catacombs, El-Montazah Place
  • The Nile River (4 nights spent on a river boat)

Dates of Travel: December 26, 2009 – January 11, 2010
Program Fee*: $4,062 per student
Tuition for 6 credit hours + $20 fee: $587 per student
Personal Expenses**: $200 per student

Total Approximate Cost: $4,750 per student

Non-refundable Deposit: $95 due March 2, 2009
Second Non-refundable Deposit: $389 due April 15, 2009
Full payment of the program will be paid in regular installments prior to the departure (refund policy explained in program description handout)

* Program fee includes roundtrip airfare from Springfield to Cairo, all housing, two meals per day, all local transportation, all entrances and guide fees, and includes figures from the administrative fees.

**Personal expenses Students may also want to include spending money for lunches and souvenirs.

HIST 390: History and Culture of Egypt (3 credit hours; satisfies the “Minorities and Indigenous Cultures” GP21 requirement)
