If you are an F-1 student, you are eligible for optional practical training (OPT) as a benefit of your immigration status. OPT allows you to work in your field of study, commensurate with your educational level, for up to 12 months. One year of OPT is available for each education level i.e., one year following Bachelors another year following Masters etc.
Applications for OPT are submitted through ISS. They are mailed to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). It can take the USCIS office serving Missouri more than 90 days to process OPT applications, so now is a good time to apply if you are graduating in this semester.
Please Note: OPT applications MUST be received by USCIS within 60 days following graduation.
You can apply as early as 90 days before graduation. If you decide not to apply for OPT and instead plan to:
continue your studies at Drury University, you must complete your applications for admission and I-20 for your new program of study.
transfer to another school in the U.S. to continue your studies within 60 days from the completion date, you are required to complete a Transfer Out Form, available in the International Support Services.
If you are interested in learning more about OPT or the process of transferring your F-1 immigration status to a another school, please make an appointment with ISS.
