Spain and Portugal: The Iberian Peninsula

Across the landscape and over time, the Iberian Peninsula represents a unique setting as the crossroads of Islamic and Christian traditions, springboard to explorations of the new-world, and multi-cultural cohabitation of Basque, Catalan, Castilian, Andalucían and Portuguese people. Beginning in Barcelona, the group will travel to Madrid and Seville (with day trips to Cordoba and Granada) finishing with an extended stay in Lisbon (with extended overnight travel to Porto) before returning to Barcelona to end the program. We will look specifically at how traditional and modern architecture in these areas reflect the cultural traditions and history of each region.

The two courses offered during this program, ARCH 458 (Culture & Place) and ARCH 428 (Journaling), satisfy the Hammons School of Architecture’s study abroad requirements. Both courses are drawing intensive and specific drawing skills will be cultivated and developed. While intended primarily for architecture majors, non-architecture majors are encouraged to join the program. In such cases, specific assignments can be tailored to replace drawing/sketching with other forms of documentation and reflection.
