Scholarships & Awards

The Greek Life Office partners with chapters to provide members and new members with multiple opportunities for leadership, involvement and academic recognition. From distinctive ceremonies and award certificates to special meeting treats and personal congratulatory contact, each member and new member is recognized as a valued individual contributor to the Greek community. This support and recognition encourages each student to reach their full potential and rewards members that have achieved success as student leaders, mentors and supporters of the Greek community.

Scholarships

Awards

The Greek Excellence Awards were founded Gamma Sigma Alpha in 2006 to provide an opportunity to recognize the achievement and excellence of the outstanding leaders and supporters of the Greek community.

The Greek Excellence Awards are held each year as the closing event of Greek Week. During the Greek Excellence Awards each year, presenters will announce awards earned by deserving students, chapters and mentors of the Drury Greek community and review highlights of Greek Life accomplishments. These items include chapter member academic achievements, retention and recruitment statistics reviews and community service hours completed and money raised. These special presentations continue to provide positive information to the campus and community about the successes of Drury Greek Life.

Award Selection Committees

The Greek Excellence Awards Selection Committee is composed of at least five members of the Drury community who are knowledgeable about Greek Life but were not associated with a Drury chapter during their collegiate experience.  The committee is newly selected by the Greek Life Staff each year and is asked to choose the winners for the Outstanding Member and Outstanding New Member Awards. The GEA Selection Committee members review Nomination Forms of all nominees and selects the nominee that they feel best embodies the characteristics of an ideal member.  All identifying information is removed from the Nomination Forms during the selection process.  After a GEA Selection Committee member chooses a candidate for each award, they submit their selections to the Greek Life Office.  The Greek Life Staff processes the results to determine the winner. A non-Greek Life Staff member verifies all results before the final awards are presented.

An odd number of GEA Selection Committee members are chosen each year to reduce the instance of ties.  However, if the GEA Selection Committee chooses more than one nominee as the winner, there can be a tie for the award.

For the Greek Innovation, Living Your Values, and Distinguished Service Awards, Greek Life Staff both nominates and selects the winners.  Greek Life Staff determines the recipients of these awards based on improvements and accomplishments of each chapter and stand out Greek chapter members.

Greek Excellence Awards Nominations

Greek chapters should choose the method of chapter nominee selection that works best for the majority of the chapter.  It is strongly recommended, but not required, to hold a voting session during a regular meeting to select the chapter nominees for each award available.

Two nomination forms are distributed to each Greek chapter: a single chapter consensus form and individual forms for each member. The chapter, as a whole, is to nominate two outstanding members, two outstanding new members, and a notable alumnus/alumna. A chapter leader is strongly encouraged to write a specific and professional statement reflecting qualities of the nominees and the reasons for which they were selected to represent the chapter.  These statements must be listed on the Chapter Selection Form, but may be also be submitted electronically.  The statement regarding the chapter nominee should be brief and concise.

Chapter Nominees will receive the Nominee Information Worksheet to complete for the Greek Excellence Awards Selection Committee. Chapter members may only win each award once during their collegiate career, but a member may win both the Outstanding New Member and Outstanding Chapter Member Awards during their collegiate career.

On each individual form, chapter members are instructed to nominate a staff member, faculty member, academic department, and administrative department that worked during the year to further Greek initiatives and greatly influenced the Drury, Greek, and Springfield communities.

The Chapter President (or a Gamma Sigma Alpha Officer) should return the completed Chapter Nomination Form and Individual Nomination Forms to the Student Activities office (FSC 124) by 5 pm on March 1.  Late forms will not be accepted and could restrict the chapter's ability to participate in the Greek Excellence Awards process.
