President's Walking Challenge

Drury Wellness Department will provide you with a pedometer to track your daily steps. Challenge the President to 3 months of walking to see who can total the most steps. There are several challenges you can work to win, including: most steps walked, group challenge around the world, most improved and others. Regardless of the goals, everyone is winner when you increase your physical activity daily!

Fitness Classes

Barre (Bar) Exercise
Barre Exercise classes use stationary handrails, ballet barres, for support during both slow exercises, which stretch and warm up muscles, and fast exercises, which strengthen muscles. Classes help improve posture, core strength, stability and balance. The does not involve any bouncing or jumping. When you work at the barre you have a sense of center and balance that allows you to concentrate on the muscle group you are working on. The body is worked as both a coordinated whole and in isolated muscle groups, maximizing the bodies full potential.

Beginners Fitness
This is an open level class, geared towards familiarizing individuals with fitness exercises and equipment. This class will include all aspects of fitness including, strength, flexibility, speed, and agility. Exercises done in this class will range from stretching, cardio, to light weight toning. We will spend time learning proper form, how to work around injuries and/or avoid future injuries. This class is great for anyone just starting a new workout routine or someone wanting change up old exercise regimens.

Boot Camp
This is a weekly class designed to builds muscular strength & endurance, utilizing hand weights, jump ropes, resistance band, and more. All fitness levels are welcome! This class practices athletic abilities by including various cardio elements ranging from medicine ball throws to mountain climbers.  Other exercises incorporate inner core strength and balance. Each exercise will have a beginner's version and an intermediate variation so individuals can work at their own pace. Every Boot Camp class will be different than the previous one to expand individual's athletic strengths.

BOSU Fitness
The BOSU workout focuses on stability that engages both small and large muscle groups at the same time for a more thorough and complete workout. The BOSU fitness classes work your entire body; glutes, hips, thighs, upper body and core will be challenged. A BOSU feels like a cross between a core board and a stability ball. This class will help you improve your balance while increasing tone. Some light hand weights may also be used. Enjoy a new challenge with this class.

Cardio Sculpt
Cardio Sculpt classes are high energy, cardiovascular exercise which offers the perfect blend of cardio training and muscle sculpting. Cardio sculpt will help you lose unwanted body fat while shaping muscles for a lean and tight look. The cardio gets your body ready for action with a warm up that has you stepping, stretching, reaching, and lunging…and that's just for starters. A series of isolation exercises will work your arms and legs with a nice dose of core work to top it all off.   All props are included for this class... bosu's, bands, jump ropes, weights, medicine ball and…you!

Core & Abs
This class concentrates on your core muscles including your abdominal muscles and your lower back. With this class lasting almost an hour, the instructor will incorporate cardio and stretching into the workouts. This class entitles fast pace abdominal routines from medicine balls to isometric exercises. If you want to be pushed and feel "the burn", this class will be what you are looking for.

Cross Training (X-Training)
X-Training is an all levels class using circuit training to increase heart rate to help you burn fat and tone muscles.  Participants are lead through different forms of aerobic exercise to keep your heart rate up. This class will take you through a full body workout as you work at your own speed and ability. Most of the exercises incorporated in this class will come from plyometrics, which means using your own body weight. Some of the training exercises for X-Training will include varying types of push-ups, triceps dips, lunges, squats, sit-up, and planks. Feel you are too out of shape? Don't sweat it – modifications will be offered for each set of exercise and you can go at your own pace. You will be amazed at the progress you make through the course of the class.

Dance Fusion
Ever been on vacation and wished you knew how to SALSA?  How about a side of LINE DANCING to go with it?   Enjoy dance fusion as you learn ballroom dancing, line dancing, salsa and more. No dance partner? No worries, this isn't Noah's Ark....you WON'T be paired up.  But if you have a dance partner please do invite him/her. This class is not progressive; you can miss a class and not get left behind.  Come learn new skills you can take to the dance floor, family gatherings or that huge mirror in your dining room.   You'll have fun, get a good workout and work muscles you didn't know existed!   Cuban hip motion is an AMAZING abdominal work out.  Why not cha cha cha through your Wednesday?

Dynamic Stretching
Dynamic stretching increases range of movement, blood and oxygen flow to your muscles.  It incorporates slow controlled movements that promote elongating muscles through repetitive, progressive movements. The dynamic stretching movements should be smooth, avoiding jerky actions. This form of stretching improves flexibility and balance and can help athletes improve performance.

Mat Pilates
This class focuses on improving flexibility, strength, and body awareness. Pilates seeks to develop controlled movement from a strong core through a focus in six principles: concentration, control, center, flow, precision and breathing.  This is a resistance training exercise, not aerobic, but the heart rate may increase for an individual who is new to this activity.

Qigong/Yoga
This fifteen-hundred year-old meditative calisthenics involves body, mind, breath, qi, and spirit. It is the root of Chinese yoga and martial arts. The movements are athletic and dynamic while incorporating meditation. Qigong cultivates Qi (vital energy), Jing (essence), and Shen (spirit) to activate the flow of life energy and awareness. This exercise is for all ages, body types, and fitness levels.

Rejuvenation for Students
This class is a great option for light resistance exercise, stress management and stretching. Rejuvenation classes will help you increase flexibility and balance while using mindful techniques to relieve stress and promote relaxation. The goal of Rejuvenation is to have you to engage the body, mind and spirit so you leave revived and ready for your studies.

Small Group Personal Training
These classes include personal assessment and progression allowing you to increase at your own pace. Your instructor will help you realize your goals and help you get acquainted with a workout regimen. This is a great class for beginners who want to learn how to use equipment, as well as those who want to push training to next level.

Spin & Tone
This class offers a valuable way to exercise and burn calories with low impact. Participants are led through routines that are designed to simulate terrain and situations similar to riding a bike outdoors. Besides being a great form of aerobic activity, indoor cycling is also beneficial in strengthening the muscles of the lower body. The beauty of indoor cycling; each participant can control his/her level of intensity.

Stretch & Flex
Stretch & Flex is a yoga-based class taught Vinyasa-style. The word Vinyasa means "breath-synchronized movement," so this class will be continuously moving through yoga poses while keeping in pace with the breath. Each class also incorporates planks, chatarongas (yoga push-ups), and lunging to help strength and tone, while stretching and releasing stress and tension from both the mind and body. Stretch & Flex is an all levels class, always offering modifications to meet each individual's needs.

Tai Chi
This class is a form of Chinese martial art that uses slow movements and a focus on three main areas: health, meditation, and martial art.  Tai Chi was once practiced for its defense training, but this class focuses on its health benefits and stress management.  Focusing the mind solely on the movements of the form helps to bring about a state of mental calm and clarity.

Yoga for Staff
Yoga involves a series of poses that enhance our cardiovascular system, strengthen our muscles improve our digestive activity and cleanse our entire body.  It also includes breathing exercises that soothe our nervous system and meditation that develops mental clarity. It is good for increasing flexibility and balance while promoting relaxation and relieving stress. Yoga has been used as a mediation technique for thousands of years. The benefits of yoga include improvements of the body, mind, and spirit.  The style of yoga is Vinyasa, which means breath-synchronized movement. It is a style  based on the performance of a series of poses called Sun Salutations, in which movement is matched to the breath. A Vinyasa class will typically start with a number of Sun Salutations to warm up the body.   The class will end with a restorative pose followed by final relaxation.  You will leave the class feeling relaxed and refreshed! Come enjoy an ancient form of exercise and meditation that will leave you feeling stress free and physically fit.
