Dr. Randy Fuller, Drury University Professor of English, will discuss his new book that has just been published.  He has always been a highly sought after presenter for Mature Learners.

“How We Beat the British, Part One: The True Story of the Minute Men at Lexington and Concord” by MSU Department of History Professor Dr. Bill Piston
The American Revolution began with the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” at Concord and Lexington, Mass., on April 19, 1775.  According to legend, stalwart American farmers grabbed their trusty rifles and employed their woods lore and marksmanship to defeat the British, whose bright red uniforms and foolish European tactics made them easy prey.  Dr. Piston will discuss how the reality was quite different, yet even more to the credit of the patriots who fought that day

“How We Beat the British, Part Two: George Washington’s Strategy for Victory” continuation discussion by Dr. Bill Piston
Few generals who won a war were defeated as often as  Georgia Washington, Virginia aristocrat and amateur soldier.  How then did Washington prevail?   Dr. Piston will discuss how Washington devised a strategy that allowed the Americans to defeat the British, the world’s most powerful nation.

Populist Cartoons:  A Window into the Third Party Movement – 1890’s
The history of the Populist Movement will be told by Dr. Bob Miller, MSU History Professor, through the medium of cartoons taken from Populist-oriented newspapers of the 1890s.  Populist editors especially designed their newspapers to attract new converts and rally them to the cause on election day.

“Theatre is Magic”
Maxine Whittaker of the Springfield Theatre Alliance will make this presentation about theatre and how it can make dreams come true.  The writer dreams, then writes, then the director dreams the play to reality.  The actors dream of playing that exciting role and the audience dreams of having a thrilling night of theatre.

The Butterfield Overland Mail 
Todd Wilkinson, Service Desk Manager, Adjunct Instructor at OTC will make this presentation about the Butterfield Overland Stage.  This company operated from 1857 through 1861 and went in Missouri from St. Louis through Fort Smith, AR and on through Indian Territory.  This is a part of our storied past and has been featured in many westerns including at least one Randolph Scott movie.

Riches to Rags
Dr. Sandra White will tell how she happened to select the topics of mental illness and homelessness for her novel, “Riches to Rags,” and what she learned about each topic in the aftermath of writing the book.

“God Is Not One: The Eight Rival Religions That Run The World-And Why Their Differences Matter” by Stephen Prothero
Dr. Jack Llewellyn, Professor and Department Head of the MSU Department of Religious Studies, will discuss this book which is an overview of the world religions.  This is situated in an argument that when people say that all the religions are the same they make a big mistake.

Jul 5 – Meet at 2:00 PM at Wilson’s Creek Battlefield

A trip to Wilson’s Creek Battlefield
We will meet at Wilson’s Creek Battlefield and see a 28 minute orientation film and an 8 minute electric map presentation.  The entrance fee is $5; however, a senior pass gets you and everyone in your car (up to 4 adults) in free.

Steps needed to become a U.S. Citizen
Charles Pratt, Community Relations Officer of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Kansas City, MO, will discuss the government’s immigration programs and its laws to help us understand the requirements and path to U. S. citizenship.

What’s that thing out there glinting in the Sun?
A presentation by Dr. Greg Ojakangas, Drury University Physics Professor.  He will be discussing his research on space debris studies.  He will have lots of nice graphics and will bring the topic “down to earth” for us.

Current counseling concerns of college students.
Ed Derr, Drury University Director of Counseling, will make a presentation about the current concerns of University students.  He will talk about problems that have been presented to him through counseling.
