Jayon You is a landscape architect and urban designer, also trained as a social anthropologist and a classical pianist. She holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Social Anthropology from Oxford University, and a B.A. from University of Pennsylvania in Philosophy, Politics & Economics. She has worked at urban design and landscape architecture offices of Arriola y Fiol in Barcelona, Spain, Buero Kiefer in Berlin, Germany, and MFLA in San Francisco, CA, before joining Drury University’s Hammons School of Architecture in 2010.
She teaches courses in urban design studio, community design studio and architecture/landscape joint studio, as well as thesis writing seminar and elective seminars that explore a wide range of critical urban/design issues. Drawing from her inter-disciplinary background and training, she actively incorporates social-anthropological methodology of ethnography and fieldwork as a basis for design, as well as the relationship among different genres of art – including music, dance, literature and film to enhance experiential and emotional qualities of space.
As a passionate believer in the value of liberal arts education and liberal learning, her teaching extends to the university-wide core curriculum, and has taught courses encompassing the issues of identity, culture and diaspora in a globalizing environment.
Her research has focused on the subject of informal urbanism; materialization of identity in critical reconstruction of Berlin and post-communist cities in Eastern Europe; critical revitalization of the US cities; public health, sustainability and built environment, and the relationship between music and architecture. In 2012, she founded ‘polyphony’ – an interdisciplinary design/research studio that combines an intersection among the arts, anthropology and design.
