Greek Life Academic Guidelines

Academic Guidelines
Greek organizations are expected to maintain the academic standards of the Greek community, including the chapter semester GPA should be above the men's/women's semester GPA and the all-fraternity/all-sorority semester GPA.

Each chapter has their own academic requirements for joining and maintaining membership. However, Greek organizations are required to have chapter GPA standards for officers and initiation into the chapter. The Student Activities Office recommendations for these requirements are:

  • GPA standard for initiation into the chapter: 2.75 GPA
  • GPA standard for holding a chapter office: 2.75 GPA  

Member Involvement
Members and new members are expected to contribute their time and talents to making a successful chapter. This includes maintaining high academic standards, attending regular chapter meetings, and becoming involved in Greek community. A member or new member is considered to be in good academic standing with the chapter provided that they have met the academic requirements of the Greek organization to which they are a member.

Requirements
All Greek students are required to have a completed Grade Release Statement on file in the Student Activities Office. These forms are student-signed academic information release forms that allow chapter leadership to view grade-related information from each member. They remain effective for the duration of a member's involvement with their Greek chapter. 

Greek students are required to actively participate in one academic success program per semester.  This program is selected by the Academic officer and offered as a special program or incorporated in regular chapter meetings.

 Alumni & Collegiate Connections Guidelines
Greek organizations do not exist for only four years while in college, Greek organizations last a lifetime.  In order to make Greek Life a truly life long experience, it’s important to keep alumni members up-to-date on the latest news from the Drury chapter and Drury community.  It is the responsibility of the Alumni and Collegiate Connections Officer to keep alumni informed and connected. 

Greek organizations are expected to maintain the alumni connections standards of the Greek community, including positive alumni involvement, recognizing outstanding alumni/parents and communicating effectively with alumni groups.  Each chapter has their own alumni connections requirements for joining and maintaining involvement. However, Greek organizations are required to have chapter alumni connections standards for officers and involvement in the chapter. The Student Activities Office recommendations for these requirements are:

  • Semester meeting with the Drury University Alumni & Development Office
  • Create/Maintain/Improve a system of communication to alumni with chapter updates, member highlights, Greek Life information and relevant Drury University events news.  This communication should be provided each semester at a minimum.
  • Host a networking event with local alumni.  This could be as simple as a meet and great to as big as shadowing days.
  • Work with alumni advisors regularly to improve chapter operations.

Member Involvement
Members and new members are expected to contribute their time and talents to making a successful chapter. This includes participating in events with alumni, collaborating with alumni mentors, and presenting awards to role-model alumni and parents. A member or new member is considered to be in good academic standing with the chapter provided that they have met the alumni connections requirements of the Greek organization to which they are a member.

Requirements
Greek students are required to actively participate in one alumni connections program per semester.  This program is selected by the Alumni & Parent officer and offered as a special program or incorporated in regular chapter meetings.

 

Council Officer & Campus Involvement Guidelines
Greek organizations have a strong presence in the Drury community.  Greeks are some of the most involved students and often hold leadership positions.  It is the responsibility of the Council Officer/Campus Involvement Officer to hold their chapter responsible for this campus involvement.   

Greek organizations are expected to maintain the campus involvement standards of the Greek community, including maintaining member involvement above the independent student involvement level.  Each chapter has their own campus involvement requirements for joining and maintaining membership. However, Greek organizations are required to have campus involvement standards for officers and involvement in the chapter. The Student Activities Office recommendations for these requirements are:

  • Encourage attendance at Drury University campus-wide events such as Homecoming week, Earth Day, and Theme Day
  • Encourage attendance at Drury University recruiting events like Discover Drury Day, Admitted Student Day and First-Year Orientation
  • Member participation in key campus involvement opportunities like Orientation Leader, Resident Assistant, Student Athlete
  • Hold each member accountable for active participation in one additional Drury student involvement opportunity in addition to Greek chapter and Greek intramurals teams

 Member Involvement
Members and new members are expected to contribute their time and talents to making a successful chapter. This includes maintaining high campus involvement standards, actively participating in campus-improvement related opportunities, and becoming actively involved in Drury community. A member or new member is considered to be in good campus involvement standing with the chapter provided that they have met the campus involvement requirements of the Greek organization to which they are a member.

Requirements
All Greek students are required to have a completed Membership Acceptance Contract and Membership Expectations Contract on file in the Student Activities Office. These forms are student-signed membership commitment forms that ensure members understand the rights and responsibilities of joining and maintaining membership in each chapter. They remain effective for the duration of a member's involvement with their Greek chapter or the current academic year. 

Greek students are required to actively participate in three campus involvement programs per semester.  This program is selected by the IFC or Panhellenic officers and offered as a special council-sponsored program or incorporated in regular chapter meetings. These events include:

  • One program that benefits the campus community
  • One program sponsored by another Greek chapter
  • One program sponsored by IFC/Panhellenic Council

Safe Living Guidelines

President Guidelines
Greek organizations need quality leaders of the Greek community to serve as their student leaders.  These leaders are responsible for the overall operations and success of the chapter, including member development, sound financial and standards accountability, and active participation in Greek improvement initiatives.  Each chapter has their own campus involvement requirements for leadership. However, Greek organizations are required to have leadership for presidents and officers in the chapter. The Student Activities Office recommendations for these requirements are:

  • Provide necessary documents and forms to the Student Activities office
  • Plan and lead officer/member development and safety/operations workshops each semester
  • Renew the student organization each year with the Student Activities Office

Member Involvement
Members and new members are expected to contribute their time and talents to making a successful chapter. This includes supporting leadership decisions, actively participating in chapter and Greek Life improvement initiatives, and becoming actively involved in member recruitment, development and retention. A member or new member, as a chapter leader-especially the president, is considered to be in good campus involvement standing with the chapter provided that they have met the leadership requirements of the Greek organization to which they are a member.

Requirements
All chapter/council presidents are required to attend monthly Greek President’s Council group meetings and individual development meetings with the Greek Life staff.  These meetings assist chapter/council presidents to actively participate in Greek Life improvements, provide support for chapter initiatives and maintain accountability to project/task completion.

Greek students are required to actively participate in one leadership development program per semester.  This program is selected by the Chapter/Council president and offered as a special chapter/council program or incorporated in regular chapter meetings.

Greek Life New Member Educator Guidelines
New members are essential for the growth and continued success of Greek organizations.  By ensuring that a well-developed new member education program is established, each chapter can be reassured that they will have quality new members.  It is the responsibility of the New Member Educator to make this a reality. 

Greek organizations are expected to maintain the new member education standards of the Greek community, including maintaining new member involvement at reasonable levels to accomplish the chapter mission and goals for the structured program.  Each chapter has their own new member education requirements for joining and maintaining membership. However, Greek organizations are required to have membership standards for pledging, initiation and membership in the chapter. The Student Activities Office recommendations for these requirements are:

  • Works in conjunction with the Secretary to update the chapter roster with the Greek Life Staff at the beginning of each semester.
  • Maintain a safe learning environment for all new members to be taught about chapter history, goals, purpose, and standards.
  • Encourage new member participation within the Greek chapter and Drury community.
  • Ensure that each new member is treated with respect and will not be subject to hazing.

Member Involvement
Members and new members are expected to contribute their time and talents to making a successful chapter. This includes maintaining a safe environment for all members and new members, actively participating in mentoring and development programs, and becoming actively involved in chapter new member success. A member or new member is considered to be in good standing with the chapter provided that they have met the new member/membership connections requirements of the Greek organization to which they are a member.

Requirements
All new members are required to participate in Greek Life, IFC and Panhellenic development and connections events.  These events could include new member exchanges, new member meetings with Greek Life staff and new member feedback and improvement sessions.  Each of these opportunities provides an avenue for new members to learn about expectations, discuss their experience and improve the Greek community.

Greek students are required to actively participate in one new member success program per semester.  This program is selected by the New Member Educator and offered as a special council-sponsored program or incorporated in regular chapter meetings.

Greek Life Media & PR Guidelines
Greek organizations are expected to maintain the campus involvement standards of the Greek community, including practicing proper communication procedures as directed by the national office, supporting chapter/Greek community decisions, members and other chapters, and providing a positive resource for media and PR understanding.  Each chapter has their own campus media and communication standards for members and leaders. However, Greek organizations are required to have campus involvement standards for officers and involvement in the chapter. The Student Activities Office recommendations for these requirements are:

  • Maintain updated, relevant website and social media outlets
  • Submit member/chapter updates to Student Activities Office, local media sources, and Drury and national office publications
  • Only use positive, appropriate advertisements including t-shirts, flyers and all social media announcements
  • Educate all members to understand and uphold chapter communication procedures at all times

Member Involvement
Members and new members are expected to contribute their time and talents to making a successful chapter. This includes maintaining high media understanding and relations standards, actively participating in positive promotion-related opportunities, and becoming actively involved in Drury and Greek community. A member or new member is considered to be in good media standing with the chapter provided that they have met the media and PR understanding requirements of the Greek organization to which they are a member.

Requirements
Greek students are required to actively participate in one positive media understanding program per semester. This program is selected by the Media, PR and/or Website officers and offered as a special council-sponsored program or incorporated in regular chapter meetings.
