Patrick Mureithi presents a documentary of forgiveness and hope

For Immediate Release: October 29

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Oct. 29, 2009 — Patrick Mureithi, a Kenyan living in Springfield, will present his documentary, ICYIZERE: hope on Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Clara Thompson Hall.

The documentary profiles the gathering of ten survivors and ten perpetrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Through a workshop designed to address post-traumatic stress disorder, the survivors and perpetrators learn to build trust through group exercises. Participants realize they are all suffering from trauma and the most effective way to overcome it is by making an effort to forgive each other and work toward rebuilding trust within their communities.

The documentary centers on the power of and the need for forgiveness. In 2008, the first version of the film was shown at the Rwanda Film Festival and at the Gisenyi Central Prison. The final version was accepted for screening at the 2009 Rwanda Film Festival.

Drury University’s 2009-2010 convocation series Spirituality and Justice honors the connection between spirituality and intellectual pursuit and values interfaith dialogue.

All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. For more details about speakers, changes to speaker schedule, and information, please visit www.drury.edu/convo0910 or contact Theme Year Director Peter Browning, Ph. D. at (417) 873-7231 or pbrowning@drury.edu.
