SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Oct. 29, 2009 — Patrick Mureithi, a Kenyan living in Springfield, will present his documentary, ICYIZERE: hope on Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Clara Thompson Hall.

The documentary profiles the gathering of ten survivors and ten perpetrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Through a workshop designed to address post-traumatic stress disorder, the survivors and perpetrators learn to build trust through group exercises. Participants realize they are all suffering from trauma and the most effective way to overcome it is by making an effort to forgive each other and work toward rebuilding trust within their communities.

The documentary centers on the power of and the need for forgiveness. In 2008, the first version of the film was shown at the Rwanda Film Festival and at the Gisenyi Central Prison. The final version was accepted for screening at the 2009 Rwanda Film Festival.
