Drury University Parent Council

2009-2010

Welcome to the Drury University Parent Council. The Drury University Parent Council aims to provide a venue for parents of Drury students to become better connected with the University. Every parent of a Drury student should consider themself a member of the Drury University Parent Council. Input, suggestions and general comments are always appreciated and encouraged....from every Drury parent.

The goal of the Parent Council is simple: making the student experience at Drury the best it can be.

This one goal can become a reality with a Parent Council that provides avenues to accomplish two things. First, how might Drury University better assist the parents of Drury students as their child completes his/her journey through Drury University, from their first days of orientation, through graduation and onto their chosen career path? From the University’s perspective this is met by continually improving communication with the families of Drury students.

The first step to better communication may be realized by providing the parents of every Drury student a quarterly newsletter. This regular newsletter could provide information on a variety of topics. The “Parent Connection” is on the horizon.

Secondly, how might the parents of Drury students help the many efforts of the University in providing the best experience for their children and future generations of Drury students? Staying connected with your child through your involvement as a Drury parent can be an answer. Some ideas, which include but are not limited to the following, are: parents might serve as ambassadors on behalf of the University; assist with programs sponsored by the admissions office, the alumni and development office or student services; and members of the Parent Council might assist campus-sponsored activities in theatre, music or athletics.

While parent involvement has been a part of the Drury experience for many years, the Parent Council may provide a friendly structure in which the time and talents of parents are better utilized. Serving as an ambassador or volunteer at Move-in Day or Family Day may be of interest. A member of the Parents Council might like to accompany a member of the Admission staff at a local college night or simply attend an admissions function in their area. The alumni and development office sponsors events year round and throughout the
nation. Who knows what impact could result from the assistance of a member of the Parent Council. When people visit the Drury campus to attend student activities such as music/theatre performances, athletic events and special events (i.e., speakers, special guests, etc.) members of the Parent Council might be able to provide that special attention which will make our guests more excited to make several return visits. The sky is the limit and the scope and breadth of the Parent Council will always be a work in progress. Enthusiastic members and new ideas are always welcome.
