The concept for DU Uncut originated in the university's studio production class, taught by instructor Brian Shipman.
Without a subject on stage, it was difficult for students to learn studio production. The instructor asked a local guitar player to come in and play while the students taped his performance, not long after more musicians started coming in, and DU Uncut was born.
Originally the show was intended only for Drury University's student run channel DUTV, but it was pitched to a local NBC affiliate that picked up it for a full 30-week season.
