Classroom Snapshot

A glimpse of sustainability in Drury classrooms

In classrooms across campus, the concepts surrounding the creation of a more environmentally friendly campus are being discussed. Courses across many disciplines - including biology, architecture, history, psychology, and more - are incorporating sustainability into their curriculum.

While many classes incorporate sustainability into the curriculum, there are some courses that are based around the idea of sustainable practices. One such class is a Science & Inquiry course entitled "Sustainable Development: The Relationship between Natural and Built Environments."

The Sustainable Development class featured several hands-on experiences during the Fall 2007 semester, including an assessment of lighting on campus, field trips to the power plant, water testing at Jordan Creek, and a trash dive to discover the amount of recyclable waste that is thrown away.

The following photos showcase the trash can dive that students conducted in the Trustee Science Center in October. Upon completion of the trash can dive, students estimated that one-third of the trash that was thrown away in the waste receptacles in the building could have been recycled.
