1) Join the student organization Think Green!
A student group called Think Green! has evolved from the old Environmental Club on the DU campus. They are working on getting a more advanced recycling program, energy conservation, and eco-cultural change on the DU campus. For more information, contact Think Green! at ThinkGreen@drury.edu.
To learn more about Think Green!, visit their Myspace.
If you are the last person to leave a classroom, bathroom, office or dorm room, turn off the lights!
3) Turn off your computer at the end of the day
Shutting off both your computer and monitor at the end of the day will save the average PC user $100 a year. That helps save as lot of money for Drury to reinvest in the university and student programs.
4) Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
We can have a major impact on the amount of garbage we produce by becoming aware of how much we throw out, changing some of our habits, and reducing our use non-recyclable materials. Learn How to Recycle on the DU Campus!
5) Support the use of fair trade coffee on the DU campus
Did you know that we serve fair trade coffee in the CX? Go try a cup and thank food services for bringing fair trade coffee to the DU campus. Also, let them know that you'd live to see it served in the Unwind Grind and the Commons!
Fair Trade is the promotion of more equitable, less exploitative economic system of commerce and trade with producers in developing countries. When a product is certified as “fairly-traded” that means the farmers or artisans that have produced the product have been paid a living wage, are working in safe conditions, and that in many cases, the product is organic.
6) Pledge to make the light bulb switch!
Save money, energy, and the environment by pledging to make the light bulb switch!
Do you really need to print all those pages? How about printing double-sided? An average tree can produce about 80,500 sheets of paper. Collectively, the DU campus could save a small forest in the coming years! That's good for the trees and DU's bottom line.
PS. Proofread carefully before printing!
8) Read the President's Council on Sustainability Website
Simple... read the President's Council on Sustainability Website, especially the 10 Simple Ways to Support Sustainable Living in the Ozarks article.
9) Walk/Bike more, drive less
We're a small campus... do you really need to drive? Not only is walking and bike riding good for your health, but it conserves gas which results in less pollution. Not to mention all the money you will save!
Make a personal commitment to do something little everyday to make the DU campus and the world more sustainable. Recycle a can, decline a bag at a store, bring up sustainability in class to provoke discussion, join an organization, switch a light bulb, turn off the lights, take a shorter shower, let the administration know that sustainability is important to you, register to vote! Just do something, anything!
