Welcome to the English Department

Our mission is to encourage reading with sensitivity & writing with grace and power.

The Department of English at Drury University prides itself on its excellent teaching and close working relationships between professors and students. Faculty members don’t merely instruct students; they engage them in lively intellectual exchanges, encouraging them to read with sensitivity and to write with grace and power.

The Department offers courses that range from a first-year introduction to literature and language to advanced seminars in literary study, and invites every student to select a personal emphasis in American literature, British literature, or women's studies. (The Department offers a separate major in writing.) An excellent basis for careers in teaching, law, medicine, and business, the English major fosters a rich and diverse array of critical and imaginative approaches to the study of literature.

In so doing, it prepares students to develop intellectual independence and to prepare for their chosen profession--to read their world and to write their destinies.
