Field Trips

In-depth studies outside the classroom are a defining element of the curriculum and the program of studies at the Drury Center in Volos. Single day excursions and longer field trips are interchanged with classroom work throughout the term, and include:

  • A week-long (four to five day) orientation tour of Athens, where students are first introduced to the historic and contemporary urban world of Greece and the Mediterranean. This tour includes visits to the Acropolis, the Athenian Agora, the districts of Plaka and Thission, the Acropolis Museum, and the Athens Olympic Athletic Complex.

  • A week-long (four to five day) orientation tour of Volos, where students are introduced to their new study base and the historic topography of central Greece. This tour includes visits to the city's old town, port district, commercial core and Archaeological museum, the prehistoric site of Dimini, and a day trip around Mount Pelion, with visits to the listed historic villages of Portaria and Makrinitsa.

  • A week-long (four to five day) tour of southern Greece, with visits to the cities of Nafplion and Sparta, the archaeological sites of prehistoric Mycenae; Classical Olympia, Corinth, Epidaurus, and the ruined Byzantine city of Mystras.

  • A week-long (four to five day) tour of northern Greece, with visits to Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city, the archaeological sites of Hellenistic Vergina and Dion, and a day trip to the mountain monastic communities of Meteora, with visits to numerous monasteries.

  • A visit to an island characteristic of the Greek cultural and historic landscape. Islands chosen vary according to the time of year and weather conditions, and have included Aigina in southern Greece and Skiathos in northern Greece.

  • A week-long (four to five day) international travel to a city or area around the Mediterranean basin, where students are exposed to the wider cultural and geographic scope of southern Europe and/or Northern Africa. Past travels have included Istanbul, Cairo, Venice, Cyprus, Barcelona, and Southern France.

For future travels refer to the "Academic Calendars" section.
