Living in Volos, Greece

The Drury Center has leased apartments for students enrolled in the Drury Center in Volos. The apartments are within walking distance of the Center and convenient to the city’s restaurants and markets. Rent is included in the program costs, but students are responsible for most of their own meals. Some program dinners are included. To help cover living expenses, students receive $810 per semester (about $60 a week). When pooled together by apartment-mates, this amount is usually enough for food and personal items for the semester.

As part of the European Union, Greece has switched its currency from drachmae to Euros. Compared to the U.S., the cost of living in Greece is slightly less. For example, a large pizza costs about US$7 and a loaf of bread is approximately US$1. City buses criss-cross the city and students receive a discount on tickets. Using the buses to commute to and from the Drury Center costs approximately $40 a month. Buses and trains connect Volos to Athens, Thessaloniki, as well as intermediate cities. Ferries travel from Volos to the nearby Sporades Islands.

Volos’ unique position between mountains and sea provides many opportunities for recreation. Swimming, cycling, hiking, skiing and horseback riding are some of the available activities. The Municipal Theatre of Volos is a renowned center of culture in Greece, presenting plays, concerts and more. Two movie theatres in the city show the latest films from around the world, subtitled in Greek. A ticket is approximately US$6.
