About the Drury Center in Volos, Greece
The Drury Center is based in the city of Volos, Greece. Academic work is done in collaboration with the city's educational, cultural and technical agencies. The Center is housed on the second floor of a strategically located building in the heart of Volos and has been recently remodeled to include work spaces, seminar rooms, administrative spaces, and student and visitor lounges. The Center also has access to the other amenities of the building: a 200 seat multipurpose theatre, an exhibit gallery, and classroom and seminar spaces. The Municipal Center for History and Research of Volos is housed in the same building providing access to its library and other material and human resources. Program requirements: It is strongly recommended that students sign up early for this program. Up to twelve architecture students and twelve from other disciplines are approved to study in Volos each semester. Prerequisites are GLST 101, GLST 102, GLST 201, junior status and a 2.75 GPA. All participants will be expected to attend a mandatory orientation sessions the semester before travel. Students are housed in rented apartments dispersed throughout the city at a short distance from the Center. During non-field trip weeks, classes will typically meet from Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a lunch break between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. There are no classes on Friday. The Center accommodates lectures, seminars and discussions. Students are expected to work and study at the Center and their work will be supervised and assessed consistently. There are midterm and final assignments and presentations as well as intermediate critiques structuring the progress of work. Students are expected to present their work to the Drury University community upon their return home. The academic schedule generates the same number of hours per course as at Drury University, but is adapted to the special needs of the program and its context. The Drury University Center in Volos, Greece has been further developed to ensure the participation of Drury students and faculty from every department and school. The location of the Center in Greece guarantees the international character of the program, as does our unique collaboration with local municipal agencies. It confirms Drury University’s continued commitment to the Liberal Arts traditions and extends the interdisciplinary character and the educational mission of the undergraduate Core Curriculum (Global Perspectives 21) program. The course framework and program schedule are designed to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and faculty development. Departments are encouraged to develop facets of this program to satisfy major requirements and to enable Drury University faculty to participate.
